KID KOALA'S NEW RECORD “YOUR MOM’S FAVORITE DJ” OUT ON NINJA TUNE THIS FALL
"I was never able to sing, I was never able to write songs. But I always got a kick out of piecing together stories with bits of records."

Eric San aka Kid Koala is a one-of-a-kind sort of turntablist. There's the fact that he's an illustrator, graphic artist, film maker, puppet master and musician. There's the fact that he always wear shorts. Then there's the fact that he sees his chosen means of expression not as a way of showing that he can do faster crabs than anyone else, but as a way of telling stories.

And here he is, with another story, a semi-autobiographical one, obviously, as it's undoubtedly true that if your mom had a favourite DJ, it would be Kid Koala. And if you want to take that as a snap, well then be our guest. This fresh-faced Kanadian Kasanova can play it however you like. Ma'am.

Although there is the romance, silent movie comedy and swing that your mother may well smile at and even shake her booty to, the enthralling deftness and complexity you'd expect from Kid Koala is also here - woven together with classic hip hop beats, breaks and generous swathes of heavy guitars.

It looks back to the seminal 'Scratchcratchratchatch' cassette of a decade ago and the Kid's first full release, 'Scratch Happy Land' (as well as referencing his multimedia project 'Nufonia Must Fall'). But it also, in ways we won't even explain yet, hints at the many projects Mr San has to come. There are references throughout to a book about a clarinet-playing mosquito that Eric is currently working on, plus to the musical puppet show he has in development (honest). And there are also some 'tests' from a new group called Slew.

But don't worry too much about second-guessing stuff that will become clear later. Instead focus on the small but perfectly formed delights of 'Your Mom's Favorite DJ'. Try to follow the stories, headnod to the beats (Eric has always liked his beats), develop your own Charlie Chaplin routines, snigger at the vocal samples, marvel at the dextrousness of the vinyl manipulation, but most of all, enjoy the complete ease and class with which the whole thing is put together.

(taken from the Osheaga press release)

Gillett Entertainment Group, in collaboration with Greenland and Higher Ground, are thrilled to announce the inception of OSHEAGA, a brand new music and arts festival that will be held during Labour Day Weekend in Montreal, at the scenic Parc Jean Drapeau.

In its inaugural year, OSHEAGA will showcase over 40 bands on 4 stages (see line up above). Lederhosen Lucil's track with Kid Koala released on Paperbag Records compilation
Once upon a time in a land far away three magical dwarves turning the cogs at Paper Bag Records, set to work creating something a little different amidst the foggy haze of indie rock. Avid music fans since birth, the dwarves decided to make a record that kids could listen to with their parents and in turn make all future, long car journeys a pleasure. Instead of releasing plastic, tacky, gimmicky, and not to mention annoying, ditties, Paper Bag Records has made something else

See You On The Moon! is our offering to kids all over the world. We noticed that most of the time kids are far more intelligent than the adults surrounding them. We can only hope this peace offering of eclectic, new and exclusive tracks will do the trick!

In return for simple, elf magic our friends Alan Sparhawk (of Low), Apostle of Hustle, Broken Social Scene, Detective Kalita, FemBots, Glissandro 70 (of Polmo Polpo), Great Lake Swimmers, Hot Chip, Junior Boys, Kid Koala with Lederhosen Lucil, Mark Kozelek (of Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters), Montag, Rosie Thomas and Sufjan Stevens all made very special tracks just for this project. Throwing condescension out the window and understanding the concept of fun without it being mindless or moronic - all the tracks will appeal to kids and grown ups alike.

With See You On The Moon! pumping through sound systems worldwide, once the kids have forgiven us, we will all live happily ever after.

Kid Koala rings in the new year for fans in Bermuda
On January 6, 2006, the Royal Gazette in Bermuda ran a story reflecting on the success of Kid Koala's New Year's Eve show in Bermuda. Below is an excerpt of the article, which features an interview with the two promoters that put together the show.

Q: Who performed that night?

Jon A: The Butcher (aka Phil Moffer), Chewstick Band and Colt 45, a new reggae DJ on the island. It was quite an impressive selection. We were interested to see how Bermuda would receive Kid Koala. He's quite eclectic and he's also very innovative. Reggae music is a guaranteed success here for obvious reasons. But someone who's going to completely do something new and different . . .

Q: What does he do?

Jon A: Basically, he plays turn tables like an instrument.

Matt A: You know scratch DJing (as is used in) hip hop and things like that. But he's taken it further. He's creating a melody from mixing.

Jon A: He makes his own music from samples of other music and plays four turntables at the same time. So he samples with noises that he makes from scratching a Louis Armstrong record and pulling out the horns. And then, a bass rhythm from a hip hop album. He uses the elements together and creates a whole new track with horns and hip hop beats and maybe a little piano or whatever. It's amazing to see his hands work because he's controlling four instruments at the same time. We had spy cameras hooked up to watch the turntables and then we projected two screens off the spy cameras so (guests) could see his hands working, which was very fascinating. It also helped explain what was happening because it sounded so good, you wouldn't even know. You'd think it was just a straight track he was playing.

Matt A: There were people at that party who had seen him before. He'd opened for Jack Johnson recently and Ben Harper. But everyone people who'd never heard of him to people who had all his albums was impressed. Especially if they were a DJ they were impressed because he wasn't wearing headphones, which is unheard of with DJs mixing different tracks. It's unbelievable. Someone who doesn't DJ or have a knowledge of that would have been impressed by the speed, the arrangement of music. It was just an amazing sound.
