Floor Kids : B-Boy O-Live vs. B-Boy Nugs

Here’s a clip done by my animator friend Jonathan Ng.  This is the first installment of a mini series of animated b-boy battles we are working on.  You should also try to find Jonathan’s “Asthma Tech” short film that he made for the National Film Board of Canada.  It rocks.  Floor Kids part 2 and 3 are on their way.  We will keep you posted. Basin Street Blues

This is the video for “Basin Street Blues” from the Some Of My Best Friends are DJs album.  It was done by the animator Monkmus.  During the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome tour, I called him up and told him I was going to start the next album with a turntable version of Basin Street Blues.  Monkmus, who also has a penchant for New Orleans Jazz,  immediately signed on to do the video. On two separate tours I was instructed to walk around the French Quarter of N.O. and take a bunch of reference photos of balconies and street lamps etc.   I then sent him the track, 2 rolls-worth of reference photos, and some gum, and a year and a half later… this video was done.  I don’t know where the inflatable alligator comes from.  he so crazy.  Anyhow… It’s a beautifully done video… enjoy. Fender Bender

This is the video to Fender Bender off the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Album.  It was also animated by Monkmus.  My mom taped the MTV world premiere of it in all of it’s 1 minute, 50 second glory.  After it aired, she immediately called me on the phone.  the conversation went something like: “hello?” “son.” “hi mom.” “That video is strange.  That thing that crawls out of the man’s back is a koala, no?” “I guess so… you should ask [Monkmus]… um, but sure, yeah… it’s a koala.” “Oh… okay, I get it then.” [flash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUhnOrXyz6Q]   Oddly enough, because the video was so short it actually got a reasonable amount of airplay.  The different video networks would program it at the end of shows as a bumper before a commercial or an emergency time filler.  So it would get programmed at the end of cooking shows as well as at the end of hair-metal hour.  Now all of these Chefs and Headbangers turn up at my gigs.  cool.

Mosquito Book work in progress

Here are some test pics from Chapter 1 of the forthcoming book about the clarinet-playing mosquito.  I finished the storyboards a few months after Nufonia Must Fall was released.  Louisa Schabas and I had so much fun working on that book that we decided to start another project together.  I showed her the storyboards and went on tour.  When I got back she had made me a gift and wrapped it in a 1’x1′ box.  It was a model replica of the mosquito’s bedroom from Chapter 1.  At that point we decided to shoot each panel of the book by way of photographs of miniature 3D models.  That was almost 4 years ago.   Since then Louisa Schabas and Corinne Merrell (Set designer extraordinaire and head mistress of wackness control)  have been busy building the sets for each of the scenes.  In between tours I sculpt as many mosquitoes, cinnamon rolls, and corn kernels,  as my fingers will allow.  It’s been quite the steep learning curve, lots of clays and paints drying up under the lights but we’re getting there.  We are still only about a third of the way into the project.   I will keep you posted as…
